Inside the Appenino Lucano Val D’Agri Lagonegrese National Park, on an spur overhanging on one side, stands Laurenzana, well identified by the remains of the castle dating back to the 13th century.
In the lower part of the village is the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine, while not far from the remains of the castle is the Mother Church dedicated to the Assunta. Of thirteenth-century origin, but remodelled in the Baroque period, it was initially dedicated to Santa Maria de Plateis. Inside is the body of Blessed Egidio da Laurenzana, as well as several valuable works of art such as a canvas by Pietrafesa. Noteworthy is the Convent of Santa Maria della Neve whose frescoed cloister is attributed to Todisco or in any case to his school.
The Abetina Regional Reserve of Laurenzana is part of the village’s territory, characterised by various plant species, among which the rare silver fir predominates, as well as specimens of beech and oak and rarities also from the faunistic standpoint. Here is also the Ecomuseum environmental centre of the silver fir. The Reserve, which falls within the territory of the Appennino Lucano Val D’Agri Lagonegrese National Park, is often a destination for educational visits by schoolchildren and remains open all year round.
