BASILICATA: from Matera to the Ionian Coast – 2 night / 3 days (cinema week-end)

Duration: 2 nights / 3 days

DAY 1:

Arrival to the amazing town of Matera, famous for its century-old “Sassi”, cave dwellings that were literally carved out of rock, just like the many rock churches that dot the city.

Dinner and overnight stay at a hotel in Matera.

DAY 2:

Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the Ionian area. This itinerary links Matera to the seaside, chasing the magic of cinema.

Starting from Matera, the first stop will be the town of Montescaglioso, which was chosen by Edoardo Leo for his “Noi e la Giulia” (The Legendary Giulia and Other Miracles); it is also home to a prestigious Benedictine Abbey with its medieval cloisters. Then we will visit Bernalda: its film history is strictly entwined with the family of great director Francis Ford Coppola. departure for Pisticci, crossing the picturesque clay badlands. Pisticci, as well as having a district with Mediterranean features, it was the set of the prestigious masterpiece “Rocco ei suoi fratello” by Luchino Visconti.

Then we ideally ends towards the the sea, more specifically for Scanzano, where Rocco Papaleo and his merry band of travellers ended their musical trip from one coast to the other of Basilicata. Return to hotel for dinner and overnight stay.

DAY 3

Breakfast at the hotel and morning dedicated to the historic center where countless Baroque and Romanesque monuments stand out in the main streets. An obligatory passage at the end of the journey and a panoramic stop on the Murgia Timone (now a regional park of rock churches).
