La Pinacoteca Angelo Brando di Maratea
The Pinacoteca of Maratea is named after the artist Angelo Brando, who was born in the Tyrrhenian city. The artist’s paintings are housed on the ground floor of the historic De Lieto noble palace, built in the 18th century by Giovanni De Lieto. It is here, in fact, that the Pinacoteca of Maratea is located, with a permanent exhibition of Angelo Brando’s paintings, which are part of the Basilicata Museum Network. The palace, originally built to host a hospital, consists of two floors and contains two large halls. The structure stands out in the old town of the “Pearl of the Tyrrhenian,” perched on a rocky outcrop. Long loggias with arches distinguish the first floor, where the original stone portal with its wooden door is particularly striking. Giovanni De Lieto’s intention to create a hospital in Maratea is also prominently displayed on the tympanum above the portal, with an inscription on a plaque: “Hospital built at his own expense by Giovanni De Lieto in the year 1734. Oronzo, of the same family, had this plaque placed to remind future generations.” Those who visit the Pinacoteca of Maratea will also be pleasantly impressed by the building that houses it.
