The Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pollino in San Severino Lucano
The eighteenth-century Sanctuary of the Madonna del Pollino, the destination of one of the most heartfelt Marian pilgrimages in Basilicata, stands on a spur of rock on the slopes of Mount Pollino, in the place where the Madonna is said to have appeared for the first time to a shepherd boy.
A few metres from the sanctuary is the splendid bronze sculpture, over two metres high, by the Dutch artist Daphnè Du Barry, depicting the Virgin in the act of giving her Son to the world.
