TURSI – Shrine of Maria Santissima of Anglona
A national monument since 1931, this splendid sacred treasure stands outside Tursi, about eleven kilometres from the town.
The Romanesque portal is fascinating, surmounted by a tufa arch above which bas-reliefs depicting the Lamb and the four symbols of the Evangelists can be admired. Inside, the church has a Latin cross plan divided into three naves by pillars supporting round arches on the right and pointed arches on the left. The paintings adorning the interior walls are quite valuable and refer to episodes from the Old and New Testaments and the Genesis cycle, dating from the 11th century, decorates the nave.
The pilgrimage in honour of Santa Maria of Anglona is one of the most heartfelt Marian rites in Lucania.
