Patron saint of Basilicata, together with the Black Madonna of Viggiano, Saint Gerard Majella is celebrated every 2nd of September with solemn celebrations, in Muro Lucano, where he was born.
A procession of believers from all over the region, but also from neighbouring ones, winds its way through the streets of the pretty village of Muro Lucano, starting from the mother church.
During the pilgrimage, the statue of the patron is carried on pilgrims’ shoulders to then return to the town square.
The celebrations, entirely dedicated to the figure of Saint Gerard Majella, end with the “National Music Festival of mothers and children”, an extraordinary event aimed at demonstrating how the figure of the Saint recalls the highest of values, such as the link between a mother and a child.
