The Clown and The Floats in Stigliano
Lucanian Carnival
Fun and traditional, the Carnival of Stigliano has ancient roots and over time has undergone radical developments especially in the construction of floats.
One month in advance, groups of young people, with the help of experienced adults, endeavour to shape iron and welded mesh to create structures wrapped with newspaper or packing paper.
Expertly constructed, the floats take the shape of characters and objects, and the parades take place on the Sunday before Shrove Tuesday and on Shrove Tuesday itself.
But the typical mask the Stigliano event is the “Pagliaccio” (Clown), an interpretation of the Carnival, holding a bottle of wine and the cupa cupa instrument, a symbol of the continual contact with the past.
