Grassano is known as the village of cribs for being the birthplace of master Franco Artese, a well-known Lucanian crib artist who has exhibited his works all over the world. The artistic nativity scene of the master from Grassano is kept inside Palazzo Materi, one of the best preserved noble buildings in the village, seat of the municipality and a museum dedicated to the Materi family. It is a building that mixes baroque and neoclassical styles. Albeit for a few days, Carlo Levi lived in the village during his exile, and mentioned it in his Christ stopped at Eboli.
Among the places of worship, the Mother Church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista dating back to the seventeenth century, which over the years has undergone several changes that have also affected its architectural structure; here is also kept a statue of Sant’Innocenzo, protector of the village. There are also the Church dedicated to the Madonna della Neve, the Convent of Santa Maria del Carmine frescoed by Guarino and the Convent of the Franciscan Fathers.
