The origins of Teana can be traced back to the ancient Magna Graecia: according to legend, the name Teana derives from the wife of Pythagoras, Tegana, who resided here during the summer. Teana, a village where one of the most popular carnivals in Basilicata takes place every year, hosts a notable Mother Church and the historic Palazzo Lecce. Also worth a visit is the Museum of rural civilisation, hosting exhibition spaces dedicated to domestic life and the furnishing of ancient peasant houses. The presence of the ruins of a fortress testify to the centrality of the place in the Lombard period.
