But Matera in Basilicata, Southern Italy is one of the oldest living cities in the world. People have been living in caves here since Paleolithic times. There are over 3,500 caves in the Sassi, the old part of the city. It was made a world heritage site in 1993 when Unesco described it as “one of the most evocative landscapes in the Mediterranean”…
